A text, a tree or a screenshot: for Frederique Jonker (1991) anything can give rise to a painting. Through an endless series of sketches and associations she sometimes first arrives at a three-dimensional construction that serves as a model. From there, the everyday motif develops on the canvas into a complex structure that often no longer resembles the original motif in any way. She paints images of a kind of self-made machines or floating satellites without any purpose or logic. But that is not what Jonker is about. The image has to convince and seduce through its construction, colour and material, and a cinematic light that heightens a certain tension. Ultimately, according to Jonker, the work must have 'an inner logic'. In her mostly large canvases, she works with various materials and techniques. She draws, paints, scrapes and uses spray cans - a past as a graffiti artist comes in handy here. In this way she creates spatial constructions in which soft transitions and vague backgrounds contrast with hard lines and sharp forms, and in which large surfaces and minute details alternate in a dazzling whole.
