De monumentale structuur van een eeuwenoude kerk heeft voor Katrien Vogel dezelfde waarde als het nest van de zwaluw die er onder de dakpannen haar toevlucht heeft gezocht.
Dergelijke natuurlijke bouwsels zijn licht en sterk, kwetsbaar en toch beproefd. Papier herbergt dezelfde eigenschappen, het laat zich manipuleren, met behoud van deze intrinsieke kwaliteiten. Er ontstaan groeiprocessen.
Bij het maken van haar beelden spelen verleden, tradities, en doorgaande lijnen van haarzelf en haar omgeving een rol. Het werk heeft weinig met de snelheid van de digitale wereld, ze hangt eerder naar een vorm van traagheid.
Zo ontstaan de Tafelstukken en de Festoenen, waarom zouden we weer niet eens rondom de tafel gaan zitten met een waar ‘conversatiestuk’ van deze tijd ?

‘Al Nut – Al Nyet’
These are words that can be found on the ceiling of the Binnenvaarders Chapel in the Oude Kerk (Old Church) in Amsterdam.

painted money bag turned inside out.

Al Nut; yield
Al Nyet; in the end it is worthless
Katrien Vogel lives in front of the Oude Kerk, in the hectic red light district where the word gentrification was somewhat invented: booming business, rising house prices, and young entrepreneurs, hip and fast, seem to determine the lifestyle.
This relativating text is one of her inspirations in these more individualistic times.
The grand structure of a centuries old church has the same significance for Katrien Vogel, as the nest of a swallow that has sought sanctuary under the eaves. Such natural structures are delicate and strong, fragile and yet well tried. Paper possesses these same properties and allows itself to be manipulated while holding to its own intrinsic qualities. Growth processes arise.
In the making of her sculptures the past and its traditions, her ongoing life and surroundings all play a role. The work has little connection with the speed of our digital world and leans rather towards a place of slowness. This is the origin of the Table pieces and Festoons. Why should we not again sit around a table and enjoy conversation, and chat about the questions of our time.
